Car Care: Spring Guide to Cleaning Off the Winter Uck

It’s that time of year.

The time when no matter what color your paint job actually is, it looks gray.

It’s the grime that winter leaves behind.

Don’t worry – once the sun is shining again, you’ll be excited to bust out your bucket and hose and get to work shining up your ride.

Here’s what you should do.

Give it a thorough wash

This wash is more involved than a drive through your local no-touch car wash.

You have to make sure you get the yuck out of every single nook and cranny of your vehicle.

Don’t forget underneath, where salt builds up all winter-long.

Don’t neglect the inside

Don’t get so caught up in the gray grime of the exterior that you forget that winter takes a toll on the interior, too.

There’s a good chance your floor mats and the carpet will be a mess.

To clean the dried, crusty, salty situation, you can use a steam cleaner or an enzyme cleaner.

Once you add a stiff brush into the mix, your car’s carpet will look like winter never happened.

Polish and wax

Even after you’ve done a thorough cleaning of your car’s exterior, you may notice that it doesn’t seem to have the same shine it used to.

The reason is the pesky salt again.

It reacts with your vehicle’s clear coat and the plastic over the headlights to create a dulled look.

Luckily, an automotive polish will bring back the shiny coat you remember.

It’s a big job to do by hand, though it can be done. A better option is an orbit polisher.

After the polish is in place, it’s time to lock it in with a coat of wax or a sealant.

Enjoy your fresh ride

You’ll be itching to hit the road once you’ve washed, polished, and waxed your vehicle.

It may even look good enough that you’re ready to trade it in for a brand new one.
